Young White Tailed Kite Falls From Its Nest

A White Tailed Kite fledgling was taken to WildCare. It was found on the ground under a group of trees on a hillside in San Rafael, California. The Hungry Owl Project was called in and began to monitor the situation where they found an active nest with parents and three of the young Kite's siblings. White Tailed Kites are highly sensitive birds and re-nesting is often very tricky.

After WildCare treated the bird for mild dehydration after an exam showed the bird to be healthy and well fed, we returned the bird using a substitute basket next to the nest tree. Our dedicated tree climber Jim Cairnes gently put the young Kite into the basket without disturbing the rest of the family. Everything went well and later a parent bird was seen flying above basket.
